How to Read Hangeul in One Day (Yes, Really)

Everyone told me Korean would take years. Then I sat a friend down on a Saturday afternoon, and by dinner she was reading her favorite BTS song titles out loud. Not understanding them yet — but reading them. That's the magic of 한글 (Hangeul), and today I want to give you that same afternoon.

Why Hangeul is the easiest alphabet you'll ever learn

Most alphabets grew by accident over centuries. Hangeul didn't. In 1443, King Sejong the Great sat down with scholars and designed it on purpose, so that ordinary people could read and write. He even explained the logic: the consonant shapes copy the shape your mouth makes when you say them.

That means you're not memorizing 2,000 characters like in Chinese. You're learning 24 basic letters — 14 consonants and 10 vowels — that snap together like LEGO.

Step 1 — Meet the vowels (10 minutes)

Vowels are just two ideas: a vertical line (ㅣ) and a horizontal line (ㅡ), plus little strokes.

• ㅏ = "ah" (as in father)
• ㅓ = "eo" (a soft "uh")
• ㅗ = "oh"
• ㅜ = "oo" (as in moon)
• ㅡ = "eu" (say "oo" with a flat smile)
• ㅣ = "ee"
